Corporate dressing may seem like a lost art, with more and more workplaces relaxing their standards and new codes like ‘business casual’ emerging.
However, most people who work in the city will still dress corporate, so if you simply want to be the best dressed at your office, here is how corporate is done in 2018.
Corporate is generally classified as wearing tailored suit pants and a matching fitted suit jacket in a very specific fabrication (traditionally a quality wool) worn with a fitted shirt, tie and leather accessories.
To make your corporate look more modern, consider the fabrication and textures you choose. Mix up fabrics in various colours, textures, prints or patterns. For example, pair a tweed suit with a lacoste shirt and textured patterned tie. Ban boring black and opt for navy, a sharp choice for the office. Burgundy, khaki, camels and blues are also appropriate for the boardroom.
9 Tips on dressing for Corporate:
1. Make sure it fits
A perfectly tailored suit shows you have an attention to detail and aren’t going to settle for second best.
2. Lose the shiny silk tie
Try a tie with texture,
such as a knit silk or nubby wool.
3. Mix it up
Play with shirt and tie patterns – just ensure the print proportions are different.
4. Keep watch
Nothing finishes a corporate look like a stylish timepiece. Opt for a leather strap and simple face.
5. Walk the talk
Pay close attention to your shoes. Leather or suede lace ups brogues or loafers are ideal. Colourful, quirky socks can also add a hint of personality.
6. Carry on
If you use a briefcase, keep it slim and plain.
A leather envelope, notebook or folio also
7. Closed for business
Keep your jacket buttoned up for important briefings and meetings, unless you’re sitting down. If you’re wearing a two button jacket, just do the top button up.
8. Take pride
This is your career. Dressing well every morning acknowledges that you have self respect and you’re preparing for something important.
9. When in doubt, overdress
Even if the guy in the next cubicle over doesn’t wear a tie, or you’re not sure how formal you need to be for a meeting, always overdress. You’ll never feel silly for being the best dressed in the room.
